Customer Review :
Clicky but clunky : Belkin Bluetooth Keyboard Folio for Apple iPad 2 (F5L090tt)
The Belkin Folio iPad2 case offers a wireless Bluetooth keyboard and the option to use your iPad either with the keyboard or without. The keyboard is nice and clicky, but as the case is somewhat awkwardly shaped, the whole package is a little clunky.
PROS:
There are lots of case combos that offer a keyboard, but few that still allow you to use your iPad as an actual tablet. Most cases are constructed with the keyboard folding onto the iPad screen, just like a laptop, which means the keys are touching the screen. For this circumstance, in order to use the iPad as a tablet, you have to let the keyboard part hang off the side or try to fold it underneath. The Belkin people seem to have remembered that although iPad users might want the typing ease of a tactile keyboard (since how many of us can really type efficiently with the on-screen keyboard...c'mon, you know you can't really do it for long emails or documents), we still bought the iPad because we wanted a sleek touch screen device that can rest comfortably on our laps while we surf the web from the couch or check emails during meetings at the office.
Although the design of the case is definitely an advantage, what matters most to me is the way the keyboard feels and responds, i.e., the clicky-ness factor. Because at the end of the day, if you don't like typing on it, then what's the point? And this thing is great. Very clicky, very easy to use, and the keys are a good size and nicely spaced out. And the biggest thing I missed about using the on-screen iPad keyboard was the arrow keys. Never fear - this keyboard brings all 4 dimensions of arrow-scrolling back into your life...it's glorious.
The last pro is the battery. It lasts a long time. I've only had to charge it twice in a month. It uses a micro-USB port to charge. Belkin supplies a micro-USB cable, but not an AC adapter. So you can either plug the supplied USB cable into a computer's USB port and charge the keyboard that way, or you can use an existing USB AC adapter (I have one for my phone and it works well).
CONS:
I know I said earlier that the design of the case lets you use your iPad as an iPad, but that does not come without a price. Because the keyboard is velcro-ed behind your iPad, the case sort of juts out in the back in the shape of a keyboard. Makes sense that it would happen that way, but it leaves the whole case/iPad package a little asymmetric and awkward looking. It still sits flat on a table, but it does cause some packing issues when trying to jam this in between file folders in your work bag. Additionally, the velcro causes a bit of a ruckus when trying to covertly use your iPad during meetings. Once you peel the velcro off to release the keyboard, everyone will stop to stare as you flip the case up and around to assemble it for use. It looks cool once it's ready to go, but you definitely do not look cool doing it.
The material used to make the case is a bit cheesy. It's not the fact that it's not leather that's the problem, because I actually like the synthetic feel to the case. What makes it feel cheap is the rounded stitched corners, and the chemical smell. Like a new Sharpie, at first the smell is kind of intoxicating, but after a while you start to feel a little queasy.
All in all, a 4 out of 5. The case isn't perfect, but it is a lot better than the other keyboard options on the market. It offers the best of both worlds - gives you a better keyboard than the iPad does, without forgetting that sometimes you still want to use your iPad as an iPad.
